I’ve kept every sketchbook, starting with ArtCenter sketchbooks since I was about 18, many of which were purchased from the campus bookstore. There are few feelings more gratifying than digging through the crates of your past, finding an ancient sketchbook, and unearthing an idea you can still put to good use today. I’ve been told that my work is redolent of an imagined America. I’m not nostalgic for the 1930s, and certainly not the 1950s. Midcentury style is certainly back in vogue; that’s hard to deny.
It all goes back to my ArtCenter sketchbooks. Whenever I take on a new project and I can solve it by simply cracking open an ArtCenter sketchbook and having that light bulb turn on over my head, I know I’m on the right path. Next came the thoroughly enjoyable task of selecting diverse Bay Area landmarks and making a reasonable composition.

A lot of prestigious art schools don’t teach such seemingly rudimentary things. They assume the students have mastered this already, even if they haven’t. What has kept me grounded throughout this journey is being fluent in the art of seeing. This skill is like an anchor, keeping me centered whenever my whims carry me too far out to sea.

We never recommend using a pressure washer while you’re perched on a ladder because blowback could throw you off balance. The powerful stream of water can also loosen roof shingles, and if your shingles are asphalt, it can strip them of the embedded granules that help extend the life of your roof. Attach the garden hose to the pressure washer and attach the spray nozzle labeled for applying detergent. The water pressure is what cleans the surface, but there is a delicate balance between using the right pressure and using so much that you cause damage. These washers can be adjusted to the exact pounds of pressure per square inch (PSI) required for the surface in question. Different levels of dirt or debris may require adjustments to the PSI.

If dirt isn’t coming off, move closer in increments of 4 to 6 inches, stopping each time to gauge the cleaning power and check for damage. For harder surfaces and a higher psi, use a 15-degree spray nozzle. For softer surfaces and a lower psi, choose a 25- or 30-degree nozzle.
