Not a day goes by that I don’t think about the things that I learned in my ArtCenter core classes, which were really about teaching students the nuts-and-bolts essentials of their discipline. It is ultimately a way of seeing, one that’s related to reading in that it involves cumulative absorption and study. If you find yourself lost, one missing detail can snap everything back into focus. ArtCenter teaches you, quite simply, the fundamentals of seeing as it relates to drawing.

I’ve kept every sketchbook, starting with ArtCenter sketchbooks since I was about 18, many of which were purchased from the campus bookstore. There are few feelings more gratifying than digging through the crates of your past, finding an ancient sketchbook, and unearthing an idea you can still put to good use today. I’ve been told that my work is redolent of an imagined America. I’m not nostalgic for the 1930s, and certainly not the 1950s. Midcentury style is certainly back in vogue; that’s hard to deny.
It all goes back to my ArtCenter sketchbooks. Whenever I take on a new project and I can solve it by simply cracking open an ArtCenter sketchbook and having that light bulb turn on over my head, I know I’m on the right path. Next came the thoroughly enjoyable task of selecting diverse Bay Area landmarks and making a reasonable composition.

I usually create a unified and complete black and white template sketch at this point but since this client knows how I work and that I’ll meet their deadline, we took a more relaxed improvisational approach. Partially finished diagrams with callouts and collage were emailed with various sarcastic cracks and suggestions back and forth.The final art is executed in Adobe Illustrator so that no quality is lost when used at various sizes. I have a long, ongoing relationship with the excellent in house design dept. at BART (and their Art Consultant). After trading a few jokes and insults by phone, I provided them with 3 color sketches via email. He was selected to design the United States Postal Service’s 2006 Olympic Stamp, and has two posters in the Library of Congress permanent collection. UC Berkeley, Stanford, C.C.A.C., S.V.A.New York, and taught seminars at Chico State and UC Santa Cruz.

A lot of prestigious art schools don’t teach such seemingly rudimentary things. They assume the students have mastered this already, even if they haven’t. ArtCenter understands that one cannot paint a masterful portrait without first understanding the fundamentals. Seeing means truly understanding what you are looking at – and not only understanding it, but also interpreting it.

What has kept me grounded throughout this journey is being fluent in the art of seeing. This skill is like an anchor, keeping me centered whenever my whims carry me too far out to sea.
Perhaps it’s due to a collective yearning for a purportedly simpler time. I have no idea where my inspiration comes from. When left to my own devices, I simply refer to my sketchbooks.
Picture an old-school dining space with white tablecloths, portraits of tango legends, and waiters floating between tables pouring glasses of Argentinian reds. All the cuts on the menu, from the juicy ojo de bife to the charred slabs of entraña, come with a side of garlicky chimichurri that you should generously drizzle on everything. There's also a full parrillada for two if you want to try a bunch of different meats, and several incredible dulce de leche desserts. On the second floor of the towering Intercontinental Hotel in Downtown LA is chef Shin Thompson’s meat emporium serving high-end yakiniku and omakase for Japanese beef aficionados. Located in the city of Pico Rivera, Dal Rae might be a haul for some people, but no matter how scary traffic is looking, this is a trip worth making. The classic steakhouse opened in the 1950s, and we get the feeling not much has changed since.

Visitors stop to view secluded beaches often filled with pinnipeds (seal/sea lions) and travel over waters typically teeming with wildlife, including whales, dolphins and dozens of pelagic and migratory bird species. San Miguel has some of the most spectacular scuba diving found anywhere off the coast of California. On a given day the water can be 10 to 15 degrees colder at San Miguel so proper equipment (7 mm wetsuit minimum or drysuit) is needed to enjoy this remote dive location.
At one point we were watching the group on one side of the boat, then they disappeared only to surface again on the other side of the boat. Our visit was in April, pretty much right at the end of the winter season by before the summer season. There is a staircase leading out of the cove up a steep cliff side that brings you to a figure eight-shaped trail system that is about 2 miles long. This trail will lead out to one of the most sought-after sea-scape overlooks in the national park, Inspiration Point. Sometimes it can be frustrating to get to the bank, but when you do, it can be well worth the effort. The park, often referred to as the Galapagos of North America, is surrounded by the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary, a destination to project species, sensitive habitats, shipwrecks and maritime heritage artifacts. These trips do not land at Channel Islands National Park and passengers remain on the vessel the entire duration of the trip.
The National Park Service maintains two airstrips, a ranger station and a research station on the island. San Miguel is normally staffed by a ranger who enforces park laws, while also sometimes providing interpretive services for public visitors. The island also hosts scientists that study pinnipeds and manage the Island fox (Urocyon littoralis) captive breeding program that is conducted on the island. Volunteer interpretive rangers often fill in for regularly paid rangers due to budget deficits within the park.
Santa Cruz Island is the largest of all the Channel Islands (and California!) At over 24 miles long and six miles at its widest, Santa Cruz has over 62,000 acres (96 square miles) and 77 miles of shoreline. Santa Cruz Island lies approximately 20 miles offshore from Ventura Harbor. As part of their route, vessels stop at Santa Rosa and Santa Cruz islands to drop off / pick up passengers visiting the National Park.
Archeologists have found traces of human occupation on the San Clemente Island dating back 10,000 years, a remarkable figure for an island 55 nautical miles out to sea, but consistent with results on other Channel Islands. The native inhabitants here called the island ‘Kinipar,’ and bore many cultural similarities to the nearby Nicholenos on San Nicolas Island. Travel between the islands was facilitated by the ‘ti’at,’ a plank canoe that enabled the islanders to cross wide channels and open ocean. Inhabitants here left trade materials from the northern islands and from the mainland, including Coso obsidian from the Mohave high desert.
The San Clemente Island Loggerhead Shrike (Lanius ludovicianus mearnsi) is an endangered species that the Navy is taking steps to protect. The Island fox (Urocyon littoralis) and San Clemente Island brodiaea (Brodiaea kinkiensis) are notable examples of endemic species on the island. Feral goats roamed the island for centuries, reaching a population of 11,000 in 1972 when their effect on indigenous species was realized. By 1980 the population had been reduced to 4,000 and a plan for shooting remaining goats was blocked in court by the Fund for Animals, so the goats were removed with nets and helicopters. The two largest nesting populations are the Western gull (Larus occidentalis) and Brandt’s cormorant (Phalacrocorax penicillatus).
